Operating Environment: Climbing/Mountaineering
Medical Certification: First Responder/Wilderness First Responder
Very comprehensive Date: July 2, 2010
Pros: multiple scenarios each day
Cons: additional 1-on-1 review and feeback would be good

"I took the WFR course out of personal interest. I climb and mountaineer and take extended backpacking trips where the party can be 2+ days from assistance. I thought it best that I have additional medical training to deal with injuries that can occur in the wilderness. The WFR course offered by Remote Medical certainly fit the bill.

The course is very comprehensive. The instructors incredibly knowledgeable. I never had any doubt the instructors did not know the material. In particular, each of the two instructors came from quite different backgrounds and that provided perspective as well as different teaching styles.

There is a lot of material to learn and you will more likely than not spend some time at home each evening or morning reviewing. Learning all the material is much like drinking from a fire hose: take in as much as you can each day and deal with what you miss later. As daunting as the volume of material can be, performing (usually) two scenarios per day does force you to learn the patient assessment procedure simply by repetition. It is drilled into you and becomes mental muscle memory.

I honestly have nothing negative to say about the course or RMI. They delivered on the product described. Yes, the days are long and for those of us with typical office jobs, you arrive home more exhausted than you would normally. But it means you were active all day and learning.

So much learning! Date: June 27, 2010
Pros: fun, supersmart instructors, intense
Cons: intense

"This course was fantastic! The instructors were very knowledgeable and experienced, and it was clear the curriculum had been carefully developed to facilitate the maximum amount of learning in 80 hours.

I feel so much more prepared to take care of family, friends, patients, and myself in a remote setting. After taking this course, I have the confidence that I will know what to do if a medical issue or injury occurs in the wilderness.

In addition to being incredibly practical, the course was super fun!

Great Course Date: June 25, 2010
"I loved the WFR course I took with Remote Medical. The class was incredibly informative and really fun. The instructors were both experienced in wilderness/remote medicine and were able to use their experience to give advice that can only come from people who have seen it and done it (one had experience with both ski patrol rescue and downhill mountain bike patrol, one was a former army paramedic). The class has a good mix of lectures with hands-on practice (everything from taping ankles to diagnosing patients and giving intramuscular injections). If you're going to take a WFR class, definitely take it with Remote Medical!"

Pros: great instructors, lots of scenarios, good teaching pace
Cons: too much emphasis on equipment

"For those of us who like to play outside, this class is an absolute must. We covered everything from bloody noses and sprained ankles to sucking chest wounds and major head trauma. The class moved at a fast pace, but with enough explanation that we grasped the topics fully. The instructors were fabulous and so were the other people who were taking the class. We did multiple scenarios every day which gave us the chance to perfect our skills and ingrain the steps into our heads. The teaching style was a combination of lecture, hands on learning, reading from a white board and asking questions. We were given enough breaks to let our minds rest and the 8 hour days flew by. My only complaint is that we relied a lot of equipment - blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, tension splints, oxygen tanks, etc. - that many of us will never have in the field. I think it is good that we know how these things work, but I would have liked to practice more without them. Nevertheless, I was a little sad when the class ended because I was having so much fun. I would definitely recommend this class, it even made me want to keep learning more."

Great Class! Date: June 21, 2010
Pros: very professional, effective teaching methods

"I recently took the WFR course through RMI, and I HIGHLY recommend it! The instructors were incredibly knowledgable, very professional (but fun!), and presented the material clearly and in a manner that made it easy to digest. There was a lot of info covered, but doing continuous scenarios helped cement the basics and allowed us to see a vast array of possible injuries/illnesses. I really can't say enough good things about the instructors or my interactions with RMI in general. I'm looking foward to taking my next course!"

Excellent course Date: April 6, 2010
"This was one of the best investments I've ever made in furthering my outdoor skills and knowledge! I had a great time throughout the course and was able to meet some really terrific people. The instructors were fantastic and had really great teaching techniques. All in all I would highly recommend this course to anybody who spends anytime in the backcountry. The skills they teach go beyond just the backcountry though. This is knowledge that will help you help those who need it no matter where you are. Thanks RMI."

Operating Environment: Alpine Environment
Medical Certification: First Responder/Wilderness First Responder
Essential for Climbers Date: March 28, 2010
"As a climber, there are times when you are completely responsible for your partner. This goes beyond simple tasks such as belaying and includes insuring that your partner is safe and cared for. As an alpine climber, I have had too many close calls in which my partners could have been seriously injured, and thinking back - I would have been completely lost in trying to help them.

After taking this course, I feel beyond prepared for a multitude of situations that may arise while climbing. I feel like I am so much more of a responsible and ethical climber, and a better partner, as these classes and the scenarios within them really prepared me for real life settings.

If you climb anywhere other than a climbing gym, I feel like taking the WFR course is the smartest thing you can do for your partner. Remote Medical is a leader in this course, and you would be crazy not to consider them as instructors for your WFR course.

Great Course in a Great Location Date: March 28, 2010
"This course was excellent! The instructors were knowledgable and related each topic to real world scenarios and experience. The course location was outstanding as well, with clean, open facilities and scenarios that were carried out in the field. Bellingham, WA is a great town for after-class activities and I know each person in our class enjoyed the time spent in class and away. Way to go RMI!"

Pros: teamwork, hands-on, energetic participants and instructors, awesome :)

"WFR was 10 days well-spent. I feel much more confident to tackle difficult situations that may arise while in remote settings and found the life-like scenarios extremely helpful throughout our training. I've also made friendships here that are sure to continue far beyond Bellingham and am pumped to get out into the backcountry again. Thanks guys!"

WFR - Boulder Colorado Date: May 25, 2009
Pros: rigorous
Cons: too many students

"A great course. Well organized. Excellent location. Excellent instructors. A lot of information is packed into 10 days. The frequent hands-on training was most helpful. My only criticism is that there can be too many students. Demonstrations can be lost in the crowd. Instructor- student ratio does not help. Student numbers should be held below 20, 15 would be better."

WFR Date: April 23, 2009
"This class was great. I had been wanting to take a WFR class for several years and I finally got the chance. The instructors were really knowledgeable and taught a structured well thought out class. I already had basic first aid skills, but not much experience practicing skills in scenarios. The scenarios made all the difference in this class. That is where I feel like I learned the most. I am getting involved in volunteer search and rescue and the WFR was a requirement. But I would have taken the class anyway to be more repaired for outdoor activities. Less than one month after I finished my WFR class I assisted in loading a litter onto a National Guard helicopter on Mt. Hood."

"It was such a pleasure attending class not only with knowledgeable, funny, and enthusiastic teachers but with an entire class of students who really wanted to maximize their learning experience. I was at first afraid the ratio of teachers to students was too small, but Phuong, Steve and John made it work. The three of them put an unbelievable amount of energy into that class. I feel like the WFR course is just the beginning, that it gave us a framework on which to build in more education where each of us needs it."

Outstanding First Responder Training! Date: April 18, 2009
Pros: effective use of class and hands-on, fast paced
Cons: helpful to have a basic first aid course prior

"Highly effective combination of didactic and lecture material presented by experienced and knowledgeable instructors. This course is a must for anyone who travels, works or does recreation in the backcountry. The experience and skills learned through this course gave me confidence that I will be prepared for an emergency or accident in the back woods. Nursing school never taught us how to extricate patients from between trees! This intense course was the missing link between my nursing and military training. I highly recommend it to anyone!"

Pros: great/ very knowledgeable instructors, lots of fun and very interactive
Cons: a ton of information in a very short period

"This was an amazing experience and worth every cent and time invested! instructors were very knowledgeable and from many different backgrounds adding great depth by experience to every aspect of the class. I wish all calls were/are as much fun as playing with the fake blood and makeup we got to use for the class; but since there not....you need to take at least this class!!! Would recommend to anybody interested in the outdoors especially rec activities like fishing and hunting!"

Best spring break Date: April 15, 2009
"I spent this last spring break of college taking the WFR course and I have to say that is was the best way to spend a break. I learned so much useful knowledge that can be applied to my future jobs in wilderness settings. The course is intense and hard work, but if you are looking to spend a lot of time in the backcountry I feel that this class is essential. After taking the course I feel prepared for almost every situation. Also I had fun everyday of the class."
