Medical Certification: EMT-B/Wilderness EMT
Wilderness EMT Course at Leavenworth, Washington Date: July 5, 2008
"I took the Wilderness EMT; EMT-B; USCG MPIC course with Remote Medical International for the month of May 2008 at the Tierra Learning Center, in Leavenworth, Washington USA. After doing research into what field I am considering entering into, I came across Remote Medical International’s website, and instantly became interested in the courses they have to offer, and when I read the information for RMI’s WEMT-B & MPIC course I had a feeling it was the choice for me, then after researching other similar courses I decided to take the course. Other somewhat similar courses had no where near the content of the curriculum, nor had the USCG MPIC (Medical Person in Charge) certification, and RMI had the best reputation of all of the other facilitators that I researched.

So in May 2008 I took the course, and from the start I was impressed. The amount of content packed into each day phenomenal; and after a few days of the course I was feeling as though what I learned in a few days from RMI, would have taken several weeks of classes for just an Urban EMT-B course at a college. I really was not expecting all of the different scenarios and forms of the skills taught; the skills we were taught were adapted into many forms of applications, such as urban, wilderness and remote, disaster and MCI, as well as procedures for many other applications and environments; and were taught in depth from personal experience from the instructors.

One thing I really enjoyed was the lessons were taught and adapted not strictly from our textbooks, but from events and experiences that our instructors had worked through, and that in itself was a rare curriculum to find, it seems. The instructors were also always happy to answer questions and help students after hours, and were genuinely dedicated in helping each and every one of us succeed and become confident medical providers.

As for the duration of the course; it was difficult, and sleep was a commodity, as it seemed like I was always up into the early hours studying, and the lectures were jam-packed full of skills and lessons, but personally I preferred it that way, and I am happy to say I learned way more then I expected, and I feel I now have the skills necessary to be confident in this field. In the whole aspect of the course, there were a few things that I would have changed if I were an instructor, and that could have been structured differently or run differently, but overall it was an excellent course and I would defiantly recommend it!

The campus itself was an amazing campus, located in Leavenworth, Washington USA, The Tierra Learning Center is an amazing place centered in 300+ Acres, comprised of mostly forestland, which made it an excellent attribute to the course’s wilderness and remote aspect. RMI took full advantage of the resources at the campus providing for realistic scenarios and lessons in a remote setting. Many of the scenarios took place in the woods away from camp, and made for very realistic, and challenging scenarios. Accommodations were excellent as well; each student and their roommate lodged in their own comfortable apartments, complete with kitchenettes, queen size beds, couches, etc. And there was plenty of areas for recreation, and a huge lodge where classes took place, and we could relax in. As for the catering; RMI hired 3 amazing chefs that catered exceptional gourmet organic meals, every day. All in all the experience was one of a kind, and as for the cost of the course; in all honesty its pennies on the dollar for what I received from the course; this course for the luxurious accommodations, gourmet catering, and the in depth skilled lessons should cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars more, and for the price I paid I feel as though I got 3 fold the value of what I paid for the course.

There are a couple of constructional criticisms for the course, one is that I would have like to learn more, granted the focus is on WEMT, about maritime medicine with the USCG Medical Person in Charge certification, a lot of the course was generalized into general pre-hospital medicine, and I would have liked to learn more about maritime rescue, and factors of care involved on a commercial vessel. I also would have liked to learn more about search & rescue type factors in wilderness medicine.

Other factors were that the scenarios didn’t have the realism that I was expecting, they were all close & nearby the classroom, either outside or a short walk away, they did use some makeup in scenarios on the patients, but I would have really liked to see more makeup and props in the scenario to give it a more realistic experience. I would have also really liked to incorporate two-way radios and communications into the scenarios, as all of the radio communications involved were 2 family radio service walkie talkies that the instructors had, and that could have made the experience more realistic.

Also in terms of radio communications, satellite communications and communications in general, almost nothing was covered in the course, and I would have liked to learn more about that for wilderness field operations. I also would have liked to have more experience in IV and medication administration, and more education on medications in general aswell. One other thing is that I would have like to cover CPR a little more, or have more then one exercise for CPR in the course. All in all it was a great course, but after completion, I wish there was more time then one month to cover the course, so we could have gone more in depth on the topics.

So to sum it up, I had an exceptional time and I would highly recommend this course to anyone that is serious about getting the most out of an WEMT-B course, and in the process you can get your USCG MPIC and BLS CPR for the Healthcare Provider Certifications. This is an great course and I recommend it!"

Medical Certification: EMT-B/Wilderness EMT
Leavenworth WEMT Date: June 17, 2008
Pros: amazing location and food
Cons: the poor internet connection

"I was somewhat apprehensive about a course 5 miles from the nearest town and 3 hours from the nearest hospital, where they planned to feed me vegetarian food for a month. However in location being a great introduction to wilderness, the Tierra Learning Centre outside Leavenworth proved to be an apt setting, with a sense of wilderness especially being emphasised by a lack of mobile phone signal(hiking up the ridge was required) and the somewhat less than speedy internet. However this just served to emphasise the wilderness experience. The food was amazing and my fears over becoming vegetarian and being faced with an unappatising selection of mushrooms and goats cheese were not recognised.

The course content itself was well taught by several members of the RMI team. There was a good integration of classroom teaching and practical skills, along with time to practice our new found EMT skills in scenarios.

THe clinical rotation added an extra facet to the experience allowing me to see the inner workings of an A&E department and interaction with real patients- from which the all important lesson of patients do not normally have as "interesting" injuries and complaints as those that we come accross in scenarios. I was a little dissapointed not to get to spend some time out with an ambulance, but it did not detract from the experience.

I am now looking to see how I can use my new found WEMT qualification alongside the medical degree that I am currently doing. It has led me to consider career options that I had not previously thought about.

Thank You for a great experience RMI!"

Super Rad!! Date: June 16, 2008
Pros: instruction, hands on learning
Cons: food

"I would highly recomend this course to anyone interested in a career as a EMT. The instructors, who were way cool, provide you with a ton of information, to the point where you think your head will explode. The days are long but super fun, and if your willing to put forth the time and effort, the rewards are great. My only complaint was the food. Dont get me wrong, there was plenty and it was great, but it was vegan only. A brother needs a little red meat every now and again. Other than that, Im so glad I choose to take the course trough RMI."

Cons: food better not be picky, not a lot of er/amb time

"Overall I would recommend the Wilderness EMT-B / MPIC course to anyone that wanted a jump start into the emergency medicine world.
The days are long, there is an abundant amount of information to absorb, and it can be stressful BUT when you complete the course you walk away feeling not only confident in knowledge but also in the ability to utilize the skills learned."

Having been through a community college style emt course, I feel RMI prepares you to actually go out and work in EMS, not just pass a test. Time Well Spent Date: February 26, 2008
Pros: quality of instructors, hands on approach, coarse format
Cons: none

"I have been working as a Lead Wilderness Instructor in the backcountry of Montana for around 3 years now, and my WFR has treated me well. But I began to crave more and figured that the WEMT was my next step. I can say that the WEMT-B/MPIC was definately the right course for me. The course format, learning environment, commitment level needed to succeed, and the quality of the instructors all combined to create an incredible experience. This is not a textbook coarse. Very hands on and scenario based, which for me made the coarse. I plan on using my WEMT at work in the backcountry, as well as in more urban settings gaining the clinical hours I need for physician assistant school. Overall this course was exceptionaly well taught by experienced instructors in a stimulating and challenging environment."

good course Date: February 22, 2008
"Overall, the instruction was very good, particularly our lead instructor Mellissa Arnot. It was a very intense course, and certainly their was no time to do anything else than study and practice for basically a month. In terms of criticism, we were taught by two EMT B's and an EMT I, whereas the course description describes it as taught by physician's/paramedics etc. I feel that the description is also misleading in regards to the amount of time/energy actually spent on practical wilderness skills and search and rescue type operations. In actuality, the course included mostly only theoretical wilderness medicine considerations and generally was preparation for the NREMT test. Still a good course, but it could handle a lot more backwoods/tactical/disaster type focus"

Outstanding Course Date: February 22, 2008
"This was one of the most useful courses I've ever attended. I have been through two other EMT-B courses (one community college, and one military), and RMI's was by far the smartest and most comprehensive. The additional skill development in this course has boosted my confidence and decision-making skills, and I feel I am a better, more capable medic now. Watching fellow students' development was fun. In some cases, people with zero prior medical background have become medics I would trust to treat me or my loved ones. Instructors are motivated, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Faced with some extreme weather challenges during this course, they remained positive, flexible and effective... and it made all the difference. Despite a very comprehensive curriculum, the course pace was comfortable and we had a lot of fun. The training methodology fosters skill and concept retention (unlike other courses I've attended), and encourages critical thinking and decision making in an effective and natural way. Great course!"

"The content of this course was far more than I expected and the exectution was flawless. Mother nature threw snow, rain and avalanches at the schedule and yet, the course finished on time meeting all critical goals and objectives. The instructors are extremely knowledgable and as advertised are active participants in the outdoor remote medical world. Their real world examples significantly contributed to the the lessons taught and learned in the class. Pros: extremely hands on, advanced techniques, passionate instructors
Cons: can be draining

"The most comprehensive course of wilderness EMT training arranged in a manner that is enjoyable to learn. The course is very rigorous so expect to learn and DO a lot just within the first week. Even with an extensive background in physiology and chemistry the WEMT curriculum challenged me. The results of the training exceeded my expectations. What initially drew me to the course was the MPIC advanced skills, which are definitely useful in a remote environment. The instructors at Remote Medical are some of the most passionate people I have ever met; they care and want all of their students to succeed. Solid course Date: September 23, 2007
Pros: Instructors, training materials, MPIC certification, 1 month format
Cons: can be stressful

"Thanks RMI, for a job very well done. After having taken the WFR with RMI earlier in the summer, I decided to pull the trigger and take their WEMT course. As a busy parent, the four week schedule was helpful, as it allowed me to hunker down and really focus on the training, and five weeks after the start (having passed my national exam) I was certified as an EMT. This is an intense course, but RMI supplied the training and tools to make it work. The instructors were superb. We were treated to a "battery" of teachers, whose experience covered all facets of emergency medicine as well as the outdoor industry. We had two lead instructors who worked the duration of the course, and then we always had a third (and sometimes fourth) instructor or specialist on hand for specific training or general instruction. Among the teaching staff were paramedics, remote medics, an MD, a lawyer (also a WEMT), research and clinical medical specialists, and WEMTs. They had backgrounds in SAR, guiding, high altitude and remote environments, dive medicine, ski patrol, high-angle rescue, and crisis response. They utilized all of their collective strengths to maximize our experience. The facility and the training tools were key too. Early in the course, the instructors set up permanent stations where we could train for specific skills, using all of the real equipment and medical mannequins (or fellow students, when applicable). A professional tone and environment was set and maintained by the instructors, allowing students to get their work done (there was a lot of homework!). The fellow students were great. Smart, driven, interesting people were attracted to this course. We had at least four EMTs recertifying during our course which really kept standards high. The "MPIC" training and certification was a great benefit. Specific protocols that we learned (and are now certified to employ when under the proper medical direction) were IV insertion (which we trained on with fellow students, supervised by the instructors), intubation and suturing. As a mountain guide who has worked in locations as remote as central Antarctica, this training and certification added huge value to the course for me. It was a tough course but a great experience. There were stressful times, but RMI's system and instruction was successful, as all of our class passed the national registry (nice job guys!). RMI made my commitment to this course really pay off; I'd recommend their training to anyone."
Response from Remote Medical International: By Training Group, January 2, 2008
Thank you for the great review. Please note that the reference to "intubation" is blind airway insertion with the King LT Airway and dual-lumen devices. We do not teach tracheal intubation to non-ALS providers in any of our standard courses.

Pros: Certifications available, instructor quality, length, design

"I used this course for my initial EMT-B training and I could not be happier. Not only is the course extremely well designed, the instructors are experienced and well versed in the application of wilderness emergency medicine. Remote Medical’s advantage of having veteran instructors is undeniable and they are able to use their experiences in the field as teaching tools, allowing students the opportunity to learn through actual situations and actions from the safety of a classroom. Moreover, the field-based scenarios are constructed and carried out in real time, demonstrating the realities students will encounter once they move beyond the classroom and into the backcountry. Perhaps the strongest argument for the RMI designed W-EMT course is the coupling with the Medical Person In Charge certification from the Coast Guard. By teaching students advanced skills from how to manage IV therapy to suturing, RMI succeeds in giving each graduate a knowledge base that will serve them in nearly any situation they encounter.

This is easily the most intense course I have ever taken, of any kind. There is no getting around the fact that individual work ethic will be the difference between passing and failing the NREMT exams. The good news is that RMI gives each student the tools required for success and, so long as you are willing to do the work, there is no better W-EMT course available, anywhere."

Pros: MPIC/W-EMT/EMT-B/CPR certification - focus on remote settings
Cons: Intense - students MUST be motivated

"I was on the development team for this course, and have taught several of them. The WEMT course from RMI is great, I wish I would have taken it for initial EMT-B training. In every course so far we have had a 100% pass rate on the state exam, and only one student fail the national registry. That said, any student looking to take this course must be motivated to work and study hard, this is not the average WEMT course by any means. The average student age is much higher than our competitors, and we tend to attract professionals looking to increase knowledge and/or pay. Overall, our high pass rate speaks to the quality of our training AND the caliber of student who chooses us for their WEMT training."
