RMAP Dec '11 Review
Date:December 28, 2011
"Pros:
+ Absolutely "first in class" instructors. All the RMI instructors were completely credible in their respective fields with extensive clinical and real world backgrounds.
+ Very diverse make up of students with a good mix of military and civilian perspectives.
+ Good use of practical exercises.
Cons:
- Course presents so many topics (wilderness rescue, hauling systems, travel medicine, environmental injuries, trip planning, evacuation considerations, damage control resuscitation etc, suturing, antibiotic therapy, mass casualty management, etc.) that is difficult for many of these topics to be any more than a familiarization lecture or exercise.
- Poor / few student handouts to accompany lectures.
RMI provides exactly the product they advertise with the RMAP class. It is a full week of training aimed for the ALS provider who will find him/herself in a remote environment. The challenging part is that “remote environment” encompasses a big list of potential circumstances and the class tries to at least address them all. The instructors also are coping with a student population that can range from a new hospital provider with no out of hospital experience to veteran Advanced Tactical Providers. Do not expect this class to perfectly fit your clinical or operational circumstance (RMI will contract to run a custom class if asked). If however you are interested in an excellent overview class that touches on a lot of different types of “remote” you’ll find it enjoyable and informative.
If you are an individual looking for a paramedic or above Wilderness Medicine class, I would recommend RMAP. Just plan on treating it as a “license to learn” and have a plan for building on the skills introduced at the class after you go home.
If you are looking to send a bunch of folks to wilderness medical training from your “unit”, I’d recommend contacting RMI and talking with them to put together a custom course for your providers that will address the skill level, scope and environment(s) of your providers."

Pros: different medical backgrounds, broad scope of information, networking, beautiful location, professional staff, unique overall experiance
Cons: none
"If you are looking for a class that is different from the typical medical courses available then look no further. Regardless of your certification, experience, or job field this class is a great change up to typical medical courses offered. This class covers a wide spectrum of medicine that is applicable in any environment. Depending on your skill level some of the material may be review however there is plenty of information and tools that will add to any medical provider’s knowledge base. Many of the labs are done outside. Diablo Washington is truly a unique place with mysterious beauty in a location that distances itself from population. Internet is available and cell phone reception was found 15 minutes down the mountain which is perfect if you are looking for a break. I recommend leaving electronic devices and shutting your cell phone off. The facility is modern and beautiful with an accommodating staff. The instructors had a wide ranging background of experience and created an excellent learning environment that was professional and fun. The amount of networking that one can accomplish in a single week is incredible. The class was full of knowledgeable students from all walks of medicine from different areas of the US and abroad. This class specializes in creating a learning environment that challenges you to think outside your normal comfort zone and consider the application of medicine when the advance life support is not going to be a deployable option. This class is one of a kind experience. Do not hesitate; step out into the north cascades with some world class remote medical providers and gain an edge in your medical skills."

Inspirational

Pros: remote setting, outdoor scenarios
Cons: class size was too large
"I work as a paramedic in a rural system and signed up for this course to further my education. I was very pleased with the course. There were lots of outdoor scenarios which involved hands on training. I really liked how large the scope of practice was, it forced me to brush up on procedures that I'm not able to do in my state. I'd recommend this course to people who want to receive further education and are interested in the longer term care. My only gripe with the class was that it was too large. This class would be better if there was a limited amount of students and more improvising had to be done. Otherwise a great course. I was inspired being around other paramedics with so much more knowledge and experience than me."

Good Course, great location
Date:March 16, 2011
Pros: location, real scenarios, taught by als providers
Cons: not long enough (me being a little selfish)
"In spite of the rain, the location made it very enjoyable. The accommodations were very nice, and the schedule was not unreasonable at all.
I just wish the course were longer, but that's just because I enjoyed it. The instructors are very well informed and enthusiastic about what they teach.
Finally, I appreciate the fact that nothing is "blown off" for simulation sake. If you want to carry them out, get to carrying...

Great intro to Remote Medicine
Date:March 13, 2011
Pros: great instructors, wilderness setting, informative
"Great class! I really enjoyed learning about Remote Medicine. The instructors were very knowledgable and conveyed that they are very passionate about their work. I definitely have a new found respect for the healthcare professionals that perform rescue operations and work in remote areas. I would recommend this class to my fellow RN's if you are interested in Remote Medicine. Just beware... You don't have hospital resources to fall back on and you have to think outside the box."

Awesome!!!

Pros: hands-on real scenarios, super experienced instructors
Cons: wish it was longer
"What an incredible experience in an amazing setting in Washington! The instructors were top-notch and know their material. Presentation of everything was solid and followed by live scenarios. As a family physician this was my first experience with providing services without all the bells and whistles. Cannot wait for the longer course!"

Excellent, professional course

"RMAP course was challenging and informative. My background is more WFR than clinical so the exposure to equipment and techniques was great. Tyler, Mitch and Andrew are all experienced and knowledgeable instructors that look at the participants experiences as an integral part of the learning process.
Thanks for a great course.

RMAP IS AWESOME!
Date:November 24, 2010
Pros: field work scenarios
"I just finished the RMAP class in the Cascades and could not be happier. This class is awesome and benefits ALS providers at every level. If you are looking for some dull, clinical class with death by powerpoint, than this class IS NOT for you.
This class exceeded my expetations my leaps and bounds. Taught by Andrew, Mitch and Tyler, the course was crammed full of techniques, assessment skills, and clinical knowledge that barely fit into the alloted time frame. The instructors were knowledgeable and the scenarios were tough, intense, and appropriate. It is one thing to sit in a classroom and be taught theory, but putting it into action is what set this course apart from most others. We were expected to be able to work in teams at a moments notice to rescue people in the woods and lakes! IF practice makes perfect, than we were darn near perfect!
Even as a seasoned medic with more than 20 years in EMS, I learned new material and technique that will expand my knowledge of physiology and wilderness medicine. I highly approve of the RMI way of teaching and will recommend their classes to every agency that I work with here in NM. Thanks to all of the RMI staff for your hard work and dedication towards making EMS education more realistic, intense and beneficial to every level provider."

What an experience

"I just attended the Remote Medicine for the advanced provider class and was very impressed. The instruction was very thorough and concise. The facilities were a perfect match for an outdoor class. Lodging and food were well above what was expected. My urban skills and knowledge sets were reinforced and then built upon with outdoor considerations. I would have no hesitaion recommending this class to anyone else who wants to improve their remote medicine knowledge."

Great Course!!!
Date:November 22, 2010
"This was a great course! There is a vast amount of knowledge that the instructors provide, and also you get such a diverse group of students that there is even more knowledge to gain on a peer level as well as from the instructors. As a paramedic I have a tendency to get in to the "hospital right around the corner" mentality, this course helps you get out of that mind set. I would definitely recommend this course. Also the location in the North Cascades is beautiful"

Excellent curriculum - Strong Instruction
Date:June 11, 2010
Pros: realistic fun and great location
"I attended this class in 11/09 and the instruction was excellent, facilities that were used for classroom and living were top notch. Class had a strong presence of highly trained professionals from all walks, but we blended nicely and I learned a little from each person.
A lot of this class is outside, as it should be so prepare yourself for extreme weather... rain/cold... which made this life like.
Andy has a talent for instruction... I was impressed."

Pros: Great students, Collective learning, In-depth topics
Cons: Short - would love it to be longer.
"I am an instructor for this course, it is usually taught with one Remote Area Paramedic and a Physician. My favorite aspect of the course is the collective learning that occurs with the wealth of experience among the students and instructional staff. The constant comment we hear about this course is that it is the only real ALS course out there compared to other wilderness "ALS" courses. We have had great feedback from this course, and conducted already in several countries. For any wilderness focused physician or out-of-hospital care provider, this is a very useful course, and a lot of CME."
